Kitchen remodel

Before reading, take a look at the previous post. has some before pictures. :)

WHEW. longest project ever, is donezo. thank GOD. It was so much work, but i am SO. HAPPY. with the finished result.

Here is a before picture, complete with black tile, yellow walls, and cherry cabinets..

Ew. so dingy and dark. When I told people that i was going to paint the cabinets, a lot of people were like, “what?! why?! its going to look..so..different..why would you do that?!”

Needless to say, it was pretty annoying. For one, because its my kitchen. Two, because the cherry cabinets just werent my style. and three, because id say that I have pretty good taste, and i wouldnt take on the challenge of painting cabinets unless i thought that the end result would look pretty sharp.

Overall, the project took a good two weeks. Monday-Thursday of week 1 was spent painting the frames of the cabinets, one coat each day with a roller. Friday of week one was was spent sanding and cleaning the cabinets–I used a superfine sanding block. For paint, I used Behr paint and primer in one, semi gloss, ultra white. I did not do a protective top coat.

Saturday-Thursday were spent painting..and painting..and painting. Most of the cabinets had 4 coats, some had 5. I used a small roller for the sides and the inside of the front of the cabinets, then an angled brush for the beveled edges in the center and along the outside rims. I made the exec decision to skip painting the backside of the cabinets in an effort to save time and prevent the paint-on-paint sticking of the doors and the door frames. Then we put the old hardware back on and hung the cabinets.

THEN we painted the walls from the awful yellow that was there, to “seasalt” in semigloss from sherwin williams. I realized that the color totally matches the bluish greenish color of frosted glass..and matches our new light fixture.

So without further a-do…

Before, again:

The workspace…

Annnddd…ta-da!

And some little details, of course:

Our wedding toppers, and a picture of us..

Thanks for the flowers, mom! They go perfectly with the new kitchen :)

Butter Bell..

Wonderful chalk board from Auntie Vickie, complete with a Mr Oz drawing..

My view from the kitchen sink:

And just a few more final shots..

We picked up this adorable retro fixture at Menards for $11.99!! the color matches the walls. So cute.

    HEY jules,
i put tape on the back, with labels like “above stove left” and “glasses left.” I also put all the hardware and screws in ziplock baggies with a matching tape label on them.
charlie thought it was pretty unnecessary as far as the ziplocks go..but i knew if i didnt i would def lose the stuff ;)

Wow! Painting your cabinets really brightened up your kitchen. I’ve been tempted to paint the crown moulding and windows in my dining room to get rid of the gloom, but nobody has painted them in 90 years so there’s the guilt thing involved. Maybe a lighter wall color this fall. Your chalkboard looks pretty cool with your artist touch. Definitely a step up from my grocery lists and stick figures.

thanks auntie vic! I would have to agree that it really made the small space feel much more open and bright. I would feel guilty, too, about painting old woodwork..good thing i didn’t feel bad about the awful cherry cabinets! We love the chalkboard..its perfect for when we want to doodle something silly! (which, of course, rarely happens…;)

Your kitchen looks so much different then when I saw it last. Much brighter. I guess we’ll have to tackle our cupboards someday. Your Mom & Auntie Vickie say “Just go ahead & do it.” You 2 are accomplishing so much in a short time. Looks great.

  7. ASHLEY says:

thanks grammie! really happy i did it!:)
